Champion Strut®

What’s the lead-up time on product availability?

Champion Strut lead-times range from stock on most all items to longer depending on the item and number of parts required. Please contact Champion Fiberglass for the availability for any strut items.

Where can Champion Strut be used?

The Champion Strut® fiberglass framing system has been successfully used in many highly corrosive applications including steel mills, wastewater treatment, utilities, chemical plants, and desalination facilities. It’s also contributed to safe, secure, stable installations in rendering facilities, refineries, marinas, pulp and paper plants, water reclamation facilities, theme parks, aquariums, pools and underground vaults.

Can Champion Strut be customized?

Customization, such as special colors, are available upon request. Light grey colored polyester channel is available with a special part number. As for special lengths, 20-ft lengths may be requested.

What does Champion Strut® include?

Champion Strut is a complete framing system for conduit and piping support with fiberglass channels and non-metallic components. The system includes fittings,  threaded rods, fasteners, nuts and accessories, pipe and conduit hanger types, pipe hanging accessories, pipe clamps and channels. Additional components include wall support racks for framing and mounting conduit and mechanical piping.

What materials are used in Champion Strut?

Channels are offered in polyester and vinyl ester resin, both having similar glass rovings and matting. Glass-reinforced polyurethane resin is used in pipe clamps, U-bolts, hardware, channel connector fittings, molded clevis hangers and post bases.

How is Champion Strut manufactured?

Champion Strut and most fittings are manufactured by the pultrusion process, where continuous strands and mats of glass fiber are immersed in resin and pulled through a heated die. This process supports many different shapes and strength qualities. Some accessories are manufactured from injection-molded glass-reinforced polyurethane resin.

How does Champion Strut compare to galvanized steel strut?

Champion Strut is rust-proof, providing excellent resistance to many chemicals, saltwater, wastewater gases, and other substances found in industrial and infrastructure applications. This resistance can extend the project lifecycle. Champion Strut is also significantly lighter than galvanized steel, easing transport, handling, drilling and cutting, even with standard tools.

How does Champion Strut compare to stainless steel strut?

Stainless steel is often selected for corrosion resistance, but Champion Strut offers an alternative solution that won’t rust. As a nonmetallic fiberglass framing system, Champion Strut offers a corrosion-resistant alternative to stainless steel in many harsh environments, while reducing handling and fabrication time. Champion Strut is also significantly lighter, easing transport, handling, drilling, and installation.

Which chemicals is Champion Strut resistant to?

Champion Strut fiberglass composites are a corrosion-resistant material, offering durability against many chemicals and salt. Consult the Chemical Compatibility Table for specific recommendations.

How much load can Champion Strut support?

The load capacity of Champion Strut depends on the channel profile, span length, support conditions, resin system, fasteners, and load type. For example, wall brackets can hold up to 750 lb,  while trapeze systems can support as much as 1,000 lbs. Champion Fiberglass provides load tables and engineering specifications to support proper system design.

For which projects is Champion Strut typically utilized?

Champion Strut has been successfully used in many highly corrosive applications including wastewater treatment plants, chemical plants, refineries, coastal piers and ports, desalination facilities, water reclamation facilities, aquariums, data centers, steel mills and utilities. It has also contributed to safe, secure installations in rendering facilities, pulp plants, theme parks, pools and underground vaults.

Which Champion Strut resin system should be used in chemical plants?

Vinyl ester resin (beige) provides enhanced resistance to acids, caustics, and solvents. Polyester resin (dark grey) is used in less aggressive corrosive environments. Refer to the Champion Fiberglass Chemical Resistance (SPI) Chart for detailed specs.

Can Champion Strut be cut in the field?

Yes. Heavy machinery is not required for cutting fiberglass channel strut, and most crews already have the right tools on hand. (Always wear appropriate PPE to include long sleeves, gloves, safety glasses, and an N95 or equivalent particulate respirator.) We recommend using the following:

  • Cutting - Fine-tooth hack saw, porta-band saw, or chop saw with a diamond cutting blade
  • Drilling - Standard battery-powered drill with carbide-tipped bits
  • Marking - Contrasting color marker for visibility
  • Finishing - 60-grit emery cloth to remove ridges for smooth edges
Does Champion Strut require welding?

No. Unlike steel support systems, Champion Strut is designed for assembly with fiberglass fittings, non-metallic hardware, threaded rod systems, clamps and mechanical fasteners.

How does Champion Strut perform in corrosive environments?

Champion Strut’s non-metallic parts and components are ideal for harsh project environments where rust or corrosion can be problematic. Champion Strut contains dark pigments, UV stabilizers and a surfacing veil to inhibit the effects of weathering and UV degradation.

How does Champion Strut perform in high temperature environments?

Engineered for extreme temperatures, Champion Strut can withstand a wide range of  conditions, making it suitable for indoor and outdoor projects.  Champion Strut offers temperature tolerances of:

  • Polyester -35°F to 200°F
  • Vinyl Ester -35°F to 200°F
  • Polyurethane -40°F to 140°F
How does the weight of Champion Strut compare to steel strut?

Fiberglass components weigh substantially less than steel channel counterparts and can be cut, drilled and fabricated in less time, speeding installation. This results in substantial labor savings.

Is Champion Strut available with fire-retardant resin systems?

Champion Strut channels are flame retardant and self-extinguishing, conforming to UL 94 V-0, ASTM E-84, ASTM D-3917 and ASTM D-4385.

What are the color options for Champion Strut?

Champion Strut is non-metallic, available in polyester (dark grey) and vinyl ester (beige) resin systems. A light grey colored polyester channel is available with a special part number. Custom colors are available upon request.

Can Champion Strut be used with steel conduit straps?

Yes. The Champion Strut CS-SST Series channel (only) accommodates rigid conduit steel pipe straps, providing flexibility where mixed-material installations are required.

What lengths of Champion Strut are available?

The system is provided in standard 10-foot lengths, with 20-foot lengths available via special order.

How should Champion Strut be stored on a jobsite?

Fiberglass channel crates should be stored on a flat, level surface. The wooden frames should line up, so the load transfers to the wood frames rather than the channel. The height of the stacked channel should be limited to 12 ft.

Where is Champion Strut made?

All Champion Fiberglass products are proudly made in the USA. The state-of-the-art triple ISO-certified Champion Fiberglass manufacturing facility is located in Spring, Texas.

What UL listings and certifications apply to Champion Strut?

Champion Strut conforms to ASTM E-84, ASTM D-3917, ASTM D-4385, and UL 94V0. Champion Fiberglass is one of a select few manufacturers with three ISO accreditations: 9001, 14001 and 45001.
